Chapter Five

Seth didn’t get released from the office until well after midnight, following six grueling rounds of revisions and edits to their documentation. Getting to see the guts of this process, all the hurry up and wait, made him anxious.

Would Tory accept his explanation?

“You know,” Jason told him, “If and when this goes to court, you’ll be an expert witness. You did a great job. Guys like you are priceless.”

After a slap on the back, Seth dissected the compliment in his head. Guys like him? The idea of being called to the stand, even though he wasn’t implicated, made him sick to his stomach. And, while his skills were in some respect priceless, they’d also gotten him into a huge mess.

The news rolled in all at once. Subpoenas had been issued and search warrants granted. They had everything they needed to break down doors and handcuff criminals.

The agents suited up to bring people in now.

“Want to ride?” Jason asked, grinning, obviously loving this particular part of his job.

“No, thanks.” He declined to partake in the festivities. He had other concerns. “It’s late. Mind if I take off?”

Jason looked at him like he’d lost his mind and, to be honest, he nearly had. Not being able to contact Tory all day made focusing on numbers next to impossible. “Are you sure? This is the fun part.”

Seth nodded, telling a lie to respect the hard work and the drive of these agents to complete their mission. “I know you want to see things through. I need to have fresh eyes if you need me tomorrow.”

“Fair enough, Rivers. Get some rest.”

He shook Jason’s hand and retrieved his jacket and phone. When he tried to check his messages, he discovered his battery died long ago.

Of course. He jogged outside, too late to catch a bus, and flagged down a taxi. Only one place to find Tory on a Saturday night. “Arcadia Saloon.”

For the last three weekends, Tory had worked the late shift at Arcadia, dragging herself home around two in the morning. Whether she worked there for the extra money or because she enjoyed herself, he didn’t really know. The clientele definitely loved her.

He’d find her there.

A raucous crowd filled the bar tonight, and Seth dragged his weary bones through the door and scoured the establishment for the love of his life. He didn’t need to search far. Tory’s laughter drew his attention to the pool table in the furthest corner of the place.

She smiled and unloaded a tray full of Budweiser to the two men circling the table and their friends. She fit right in, knew everyone by name. And they adored her, by the protective way they looked at her.

Jealous much? Damn straight.

Making his way to the bar, he snagged her gaze as she headed there, too. She clenched her jaw, and he couldn’t tell from her expression whether she’d talk to him or not.

Probably not.

As he approached, she ducked behind the bar, putting space between them when all he wanted was to put his arms around her and hold her tight.
